Hair Typing Pattern: Knowing the Difference

Your hair pattern should not be confused with your hair type.

Many people confuse hair pattern for hair typing because they don't understand the two thereby using them interchangeably.

Hair typing is a matter of distinguishing your overall hair type in regards to it's particular structure, while hair pattern is the pattern of waves (or lack thereof) your hair has with each strand.

It is different from any of the elements used to analyze your hair because its classifications have no reference to the health or well being of your hair. Any of the wave patterns described below can be found in healthy hair or damaged hair. The classifications for hair wave patterns are straight, wavy, curly, and coiled or kinky.

Straight Hair

Straight hair has no wave pattern whatsoever in its length...

Wavy Hair

Wavy hair pattern lies somewhere between straight hair and curly hair...

Curly Hair

Curly hair pattern is full-bodied and very climate dependent...

Kinky-Coily

Kinky-Coily is the most common pattern in afro-textured hair...
